MY WORK
In recent years I have become increasingly absorbed in my family history and, through researching it, I have also developed a keen interest in genealogy as well as local and social history.   Reading and transcribing ancient manuscripts including wills, inventories, bonds and probate documents with the Local History Society as well as similar experience examining the title deeds of local properties has given me new insights into our past and the life of our forbears.
My inheritance of records and family photograph albums, and especially my father's WWII pilot's log book from his time serving in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, has opened up new avenues for me to explore.   Themes of memory, time, memorial, war and mortality keep resurfacing and appear in the form of printed text of images on the surface of my hand built stoneware, my slip-cast parianware and the porcelain slab built work.
I have also made ceramic and glass poppy crosses (45 in all) printed with his name and date of death for every one of the forty five men of Luddenden and Midgley who gave his life in WWI and is commemorated on the War Memorial outside St Mary's Church and the Lord Nelson Inn in the centre of Luddenden village.  My own great uncle, Thomas Greenwood, was the first of these men to die, on 24th August 1914 at Mons and my husband's grandfather, Clarance Hebblethwaite Holt, was killed at Passchendaele on 9th October 1917, when my father in law, Derrick Holt, the middle one of Clarance's three children, was only 8 years old.
